They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But what if you can get a picture and sneak in the thousand words too? Emeryville, CA based Fotobabble (www.fotobabble.com/) is a startup offering a web service that adds voice to static photos, or as the name implies – photos that babble.

All you do is upload your photo, record your voice and you’re done in a matter of seconds, or as long as it takes for you to babble.

You can then share your fotobabble with friends via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter, or embed it into your blog or website.

You have to see and hear one of the samples, or create your own one, in order to appreciate its effectiveness in conveying a message.

It’s more than a simple image on Flickr, and yet involves none of the hassles faced while creating, editing and uploading videos on youtube.

And this is exactly the sweet spot that Fotobabble CEO Kamal Shah is aiming for – to position Fotobabble as a viral social media sharing tool which occupies a space somewhere in between Flickr & Youtube.

Fotobabble was founded in 2009, and launched officially earlier this year in February 2010. As of now, Fotobabble has users in at least 50 countries the worldover.

There’s also an iPhone app for Fotobabble which allows you to do essentially the same thing, but looks much more useful. You can take pictures, record your voice and transmit and share it instantly.

It won’t be streaming media, but if you want a free and easy way to share what you’re seeing on location - with visuals and audio, the Fotobabble iPhone app is worth a try. In their own words, Fotobabble says you can use it to create and send ‘talking postcards from your travel destination.’

There’s plenty more innovative applications for Fotobabble, like greeting cards, marketing pitches, presentations, etc. Best part for Fotobabble is that these new applications are being dreamed up and shared by users, and this is helping them build a community and go viral a lot faster than expected.
