For the record, the official way to build an iPhone app is by enrolling to becoming an Apple developer. But even if you don’t know beans about Cocoa – the iPhone OS, and still want to create an app for your destination, then as Apple would say – There’s an App for that. Take a look.
Onederr Inc.:- Creators of NYC Way - a bundle of 50+ NYC specific iPhone apps (subway help, wi-fi locator, restrooms, food stands, events, green business listings, etc.).
For DMOs and CVBs wondering about the utility of a mobile app, download NYC Way (its free), or check out their other destination apps – SF Way, Los Angeles Way, Vegas Way, and DC Way. You’ll be wanting one just like it for your own destination.
CVBMobile:- Very niche and specific – this app allows visitors to find anything from restaurants to turn by turn directions in and around your convention center. As an added bonus, it allows you to keep in touch with past visitors, and inform them about events they might be interested in attending.
VisitMobile:- Napa Valley & Colonial Williamsburg have both created iPhone apps using VisitMobile. It not only helps provide information about your destination, but also has the ability to display ads and special offers from local merchants.
You have access to a web broswer-based CMS to manage and modify your content, and it also offers a visitor’s guide and an itinerary planner.
Sutro Media:- You’re the destination expert, they take care of the rest. Team up with Sutro Media to create an iPhone guide for your destination. Read this article from Ginger Warder about how she wrote her first iPhone travel app in partnership with Sutro Media.
Build-it-Yourself:- If you think you can go it alone, there’s plenty of software and web-based tools for building your own iPhone apps, which don’t require any programming expertise.
